Barbara “Jeanie” Bowden, 86, of Clarksville, Arkansas, died Friday, August 6, 2026, at Johnson County Regional Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Cremation arrangements were entrusted to Humphrey Dignity Cremation Center under the direction of Humphrey Funeral Service.
The daughter of Jack and Francis Pauline (Thomas) Willbanks, Jeanie was born March 15, 1940, in Morrilton, Arkansas. She married Gary Max Bowden on June 26, 1958, beginning a marriage that would span 49 years and a life centered on family, faith, service and love.
Raised and educated in the River Valley, Jeanie distinguished herself early through both her intelligence and her warm, engaging spirit. She was named Miss Plummerville High School in 1958 and graduated as valedictorian of her class. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she enjoyed sharing her gift of music as a member of the choir at Plummerville United Methodist Church.
Jeanie possessed a servant’s heart and found fulfillment in helping others, both personally and professionally. For 25 years, she worked as a legal secretary with the John Harris Law Firm, where her professionalism, dependability and dedication were deeply valued. Beyond her work, she was a faithful friend—someone whose kindness, loyalty and genuine concern for others left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know her.
A gifted artist, Jeanie had a remarkable ability to see beauty in the world around her and recreate it on canvas. She especially loved working with oils and watercolors, creating pieces that reflected both her talent and her appreciation for life’s beauty. Her artistic gifts were recognized and appreciated by the River Valley Arts Center, an organization that held a special place in her heart.
Her creativity extended beyond the canvas and into her home. Jeanie enjoyed tending a large vegetable garden, harvesting its bounty and turning what she grew into home-cooked meals for the people she loved. When she found a quiet moment, she enjoyed reading suspense thrillers by John D. MacDonald.
As meaningful as her professional accomplishments, artistic talents and many interests were, none compared with the love Jeanie had for her family. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother and grandmother, and a proud great-grandmother. The time she spent with her children and grandchildren brought her life’s greatest joy. Through family meals, conversations, celebrations and the simple moments of everyday life, she created memories that will remain treasured for generations.
Jeanie was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Gary Bowden; her parents, Jack and Francis Pauline Willbanks; and two brothers, Mike Willbanks and Steve Willbanks.
She is survived by two sons, Phillip Bowden of London, Arkansas, and Mark Bowden and wife Shannon of Greenbrier; a daughter, Tracy Cooper and husband Hal of Russellville; four grandchildren, Kinsey Bates and husband Drew, Aaron Bowden, Joseph Bowden, and Chase Cooper and wife Ressie; and four great-grandchildren, Thomas Bates, Oliver Bates, Peyton Catron, and Eliza Cooper.
Jeanie leaves behind more than the beautiful works of art created by her hands. Her lasting legacy can be found in the family she loved, the people she served, the friendships she faithfully nurtured, and the countless memories shared with those whose lives were made richer by knowing her.
Memorial donations may be made to the River Valley Arts Center, an organization that showed great interest in and appreciation for Jeanie’s artwork.
