Gerald E. Edgar Obituary (1923

Gerald E. Edgar, 80, of Russellville, AR, died Sunday, December 28, 2003 at St. Mary's Regional Center in Russellville. The son of Clint and Mary Andrews Edgar, he was born July 11, 1923 in Lebanon, Kansas. Gerald was a 1941 graduate Beloit High School in Beloit, Kansas and received his Bachelor of Arts from York College in York, Nebraska. He served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II, stationed in the Pacific Theatre. He was a P47 pilot aHe married Irene Brandenburg on August 3, 1947 at Russell, Kansas. Gerald received his masters degree in journalism from Kansas University in 1950. He was a reporter for the Minneapolis Messenger in Minneapolis, Kansas from 1950-1957. The family moved to Russellville where Gerald worked as director of the news bureau and as a journalism professor at Arkansas Tech. In 1985 he received the Distinguished Service Award from ATU. After 29 years with the University, he retired in 1986. He was of Russellville Lions Club, receiving the Lion of the Year Award in 1990 and the club honoraed him with the Melvin Jones Fellow award. Gerald was privileged to serve as the Grand Marshall for the 2003 Russellville Veterans Day Parade. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Carden Sunday School Class. Gerald also served as the church Librarian for the past 10 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Alan Edgar. Survivors include his wife, Irene Edgar of Russellville; a son and daughter in law, Steve and Charlene Edgar of Broken Arrow; a granddaughter and her husband, Kathryn and Brian Geubelle of Tulsa; a brother and sister in law, Elvin and Helen Edgar of Salina; a niece and her husband, Barbara and Herb Reed of Dallas. Memorial service will be at 2:00 pm Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at First United Methodist Church. Rev. Mackey Yokem will officiate. The family wll received friend following the service in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be private Rest Haven Memorial Park under the direction of Humphrey Funeral Service.
