L J. Hickman Obituary (1924

L.J. Hickman, 78, of Russellville died Friday, January 17, 2003 at his home. The son of the late B.B. and Lela West Hickman, he was born October 22, 1924 in Russellville. He was a 1942 graduate of Russellville High School after which he the U. S. Army Air Corps where he was trained as a B-29 pilot. Following the war L. J. studied engineering at Arkansas Polytechnic College. He and Imo Nichols were married on October 4, 1946 in Russellville. His career as a civil engineer spanned over 50 years. During his 30+ years with the U. S. Forest Service he worked on many projects including forestry surveys for the construction of Highway 7 and the construction of the Blanchard Springs Caverns facilities. Following his retirment in 1981, he worked then for Crafton-Tull Engineering on several rural water projects including Hurrican Lake Estates in Saline County. His second retirement came in 2001. He was a member of the Russellville Ruritan Club and the River Valley Harmonizers Barber Shop, a singing group which he served as President. He was a member of First Assembly of God Church where he had served on the Board of Trustees and was active in the AY's and the AY's Quartet. Survivors include his wife, Imo Nickols Hickman, of Russellville; two sons, Joe Hickman of Springsfield, Gary Hickman of the Netherlands; a daughter and son in law, Phyllis and Danny Bewley of Russellville; three grandchildren, Laura Bewley of Russellville, Brian Bewley of Sacremento, Matt Bewley of Russellville; two great grandchildren, Jacob Bewley of Russellville, Brittney Bewley of Des Arc; a brother and sister in law, Kenneth and Gaye Hickman of Russellville. Funeral service will be 10 am Monday, January 20, 2003 at the First Assembly of God Church officiated by Rev. Larry Moore. Burial will be at Rest Haven Memorial Park at Russellville under the direction of Humphrey Funeral Service. Full military honors will be provided by the Rogers Rye Post #2283 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family will receive friends from 4-6:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
