Loyd Everett Cates, 94, of Russellville, passed away Sunday, February 5, 2023. His beloved wife of 64 years passed just 48 hours before him and he wasn't letting her go without him. He was born to Walter and Birdie Dale Cates on March 8, 1928.
Loyd grew up in Wild Cat Holler, in Yell County, with a large family. On August 15, 1958, Loyd married his wife Lillie and they shared a life full of love and laughter. Papa always had jokes.
"What goes up, but never comes back down? Your age!"
If you knew papa, you have heard this joke. They had two sons, Everett and Ronnie Cates. They later adopted Samantha and Jeremy Cates. Loyd was one of Jehovah's Witnesses, baptized on February 23, 1970. He was always quick to help the friends with any sort of project and was a skilled craftsman. He later retired from Tyson after 44 years as a maintenance worker. One of his biggest accomplishments was building Granny her own home and he took great pride in keeping it pretty for her. Although, his greatest joy in life was spending time with his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and 5 siblings: Clayton, James, George, Marie, Roy David
He is survived by four children, Everett Cates and wife, Donna Cates, Ronnie Cates, Samantha Deen and husband, Allan Deen, Jeremy Cates and wife, Brittnee Cates. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Brandon, Candace, Gunner, Lacee, Delilah, Noah, Mia, John, and Ella.
Papa will always be remembered for his unfailing love for his wife and family. A private service will be held for close friends and family. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to jw.org.
