About Us

In 1933, Guy Gardner founded Gardner Funeral Home. After Mr. Gardner passed away, Herman & Kate Humphrey purchased the funeral home in 1960. Working for over 57 years, Herman was associated with over 11, 750 funeral services before his death in 1997. Today, Jim Bob & Betty Humphrey own and operate the family business, with the third generation Humphrey, James Humphrey, serving as President.

In August, 1974, the Humphrey family moved the firm from its South Denver location, to its current location at 2801 West Main Street, to better serve our growing area.

Beginning in 2020 and throughout much of 2021, our West Main facilities underwent major renovations to expand our family room, replace carpeting, interior painting, a new hallway passage with additional restroom facilities and the addition of the Kate Humphrey Dining Room where families may gather prior to or following their visitation & funeral services for catered or potluck meals.

Included with this recent expansion is the addition of the J. Herman Humphrey Dignity Cremation Center. This new cremation center features a 600 square-foot chapel adjoining our family room where private committal services may be held with family members prior to their loved one's cremation. This unique facility is the only one of its kind in the River Valley region and offers families an experience with the cremation process that is most meaningful as many of them express.

The year 2021 also brought a completion to Center Valley Memorial Gardens, the newest perpetual care cemetery to open in Pope County in more than 50 years. This beautiful 35-acre property, located just to the west of Center Valley Elementary School on Center Valley Road, features lots & spaces in four currently available sections, one of which is our "Field of Honor," designated only for qualified Veterans & spouses and developed in the fashion of our country's national cemeteries. The gardens also features a nature trail, fishing pond, and paved entry & roadways. It is intricately maintained with an underground watering system and a staff & equipment to keep the grounds regularly mowed, landscaped and manicured for optimal care & appearance.

Humphrey Funeral Service now offers a locally-owned & operated full-care service with these new additions, positioning our funeral home & staff for better serving the families of our community with the best care possible. We are committed to that mission for many generations to come.
